The roots of Berberis buxifolia yield a number of bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids which
have been separated and purified by chromatography. Calafatimine forms colourless needles
from EtOH and is laevorotatory with a specific rotation [α]D20 -141 ° (CHCL3).
