General Description
Glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 5p14.1?q13.3. It belongs to the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily. GDNF is abundantly found in gliomas.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a neurotrophic factor involved in dopaminergic and neurodevelopment. It plays a vital role in self-renewal of stem cells. In addition, GDNF also facilitates differentiation of chained undifferentiated spermatogonia. GDNF with its receptors, activates various signaling pathways essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis. Mutated gene is associated with the development of schizophrenia. GDNF is a potential target for treating Parkinson′s disease.
