Benzyl (6-oxohexyl)carbamate is a PEG linker containing an aldehyde group and a benzyl (Cbz) protecting group. The hydrophilic PEG spacer increases the water solubility of a compound in aqueous media. The aldehyde can be used in PEGylation through its reaction with hydrazine or hydrazide forming a hydrolytic acyl hydrozone linkage. The benzyl protecting group can be removed via hydrogenolysis to form a free amine.
