  Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) consists of a small polar head group with fatty acid chains. It is the second most?plenteous?glycerophospholipid in eukaryotic?cells.?PE is a non-bilayer forming phospholipid. It is found abundantly in the?mitochondria.

  Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is involved in providing rigidity to the cell membrane?via hexagonal phase structures, which promote tight packing of the?membrane bilayer formed by?phosphotidylcholine.?It is also involved in the conversion of prions from the non-toxic?to toxic conformation. PE also?initiates the autophagosome formation by attaching covalently to the?autophagy?Atg8?protein.
