Uses
Bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) carbonate (DFDEC) is a highly effective electrolyte additive th at is widely used in the battery industry to enhance the performance and stability of lithium-ion batteries. Its remarkable thermal and electrochemical stability make it an excellent choice for use in high-temperature and high-voltage applications. Recent studies have also highlighted other benefits of DFDEC in battery applications. For instance, it has been found th at DFDEC can improve the cycle performance of lithium metal cells by forming a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI).[1,2] Additionally, flammability tests have shown th at electrolytes containing over 60% v/v of DFDEC do not catch fire, demonstrating its potential as a flame-retardant.[3] These findings highlight the versatility and importance of DFDEC in the development of safe and high-performance battery technologies.
Preparation
A solution of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (200 g, 2.0 mol) and pyridine (158 g, 2.0 mol) in dry diethyl ether (1 L) was treated with phosgene (99 g, 1.0 mol). The reaction mixture was stirred overnight and then filtered. The filtrate was distilled to give 199 g (88%) of bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) carbonate.
