Uses
DL-Lanthionine is a thioether-amino acid which when present in peptides results in antimicrobial activity. Peptides with this amino acid within it become part of a group named lantibiotics.
Definition
ChEBI: L-lanthionine is the L-enantiomer of lanthionine. It is a lanthionine, a non-proteinogenic L-alpha-amino acid and a L-alanine derivative. It is a tautomer of a L-lanthionine dizwitterion.
Biological Activity
Lanthionine is a non-typical amino acid and a monosulfide analog of cystine. Lanthionines are constituents of a group of peptide antibiotics called lantiobiotics, which include nisin and subtilin.
