Chemical Properties
violet sintered tablets; hexagonal; oxidizes to TiO2; sintered material of 99.9% purity used as an evaporation material for interference films, thin film resistors and capacitors [KIR83] [CER91]
Physical properties
Dark-violet to purple-violet
solid. It can be prepared by
mixing stoichiometric
amounts of Ti and TiO
2 heated in a Mo-crucible at 1600°C.
Slightly paramagnetic solid with χ
m = +63 × 10
–6 emu.
Uses
Titanium(III) oxide is used to study the bioacceptability of medical implant surfaces.
Uses
Oxides of titanium find wide range of applications extending from photocatalysis, gas sensing to antibacterial, protective and anti-reflecting coatings.
Preparation
Titanium sesquioxide(Ti
2O
3) has a corundum
structure and is isomorphous with hematite and ilmenite. It may be prepared by reduction
of titania by hydrogen gas at 1000°C or as powder by reacting titanium metal with a stoichiometric amount of TiO
2 at 1600°C as follows:
Ti(s) + 3TiO
2(s) —> 2 Ti
2O
3(s) (1600°C)
