Aroma
3,7-Dimethyl-6-octen-3-ol has comparatively powerful, fresh-floral, citrusy (with emphasis on Lime) and diffusive
odor. Less woody than LinaIooI, more powerful and more Lime-like than Tetrahydro
Iinalool.
Physical properties
Colorless oily liquid. Sp.Gr. 0.86. B.P. 201°C.
Very slightly soluble in water, soluble in
alcohol, Propylene glycol and oils.
Uses
3,7-Dimethyl-6-octen-3-ol is an excellent perfume material for freshfloral fragrance types, as a modifier in Lime
and Lime-floral complexes, as a blender in
modern soap perfume compositions. More
versatile than Linalool and Tetrahydrolinalool,
but not quite as discrete as the latter.
Production Methods
3,7-Dimethyl-6-octen-3-ol can be produced by catalytic, partial hydrogenation
of Linalool.
