  Benzylbromid bildet eine farblose, wasserunlösliche, beim Lagern trüb werdende Flüssigkeit. Es diente im 1. Weltkrieg als chemischer Kampfstoff mit stark lakrimogener Wirkung (Tränenreizstoff, Weißkreuzkampfstoff). Die Dämpfe verursachen starkes Brennen d

• Synthese

  Eine Mischung von 54 ml Toluol und 200 ml Tetrachlormethan wird nach Zugabe von 89 g N-Bromsuccinimid (NBS) und 200 mg Dibenzoylperoxid (DBPO) in einem 500-ml-Rundkolben unter Rückflußkühlung zum Sieden erhitzt. Der Kolben wird zu diesem Zweck mit einem Dimroth-Kühler versehen und in einen Heizpilz gestellt. Der Beginn der Reaktion macht sich durch kräftiges Aufsieden der Lösung bemerkbar. Nach etwa 1 Stunde ist die Reaktion beendet, was daran zu erkennen ist, daß das spezifisch schwerere, anfangs am Kolbenboden liegende N-Bromsuccinimid jetzt in das auf der Oberfläche schwimmende Succinimid übergegangen ist. Gegebenenfalls müssen nochmals 200 mg Kettenstarter zugesetzt werden. Man saugt das Succinimid ab und wäscht es mit etwas Tetrachlormethan (Anm. 1). Aus dem Filtrat wird das Lösungsmittel im schwachen Vakuum abdestilliert und der Rückstand im Vakuum fraktioniert. Das Benzylbromid entsteht mit einer Ausbeute von etwa 80 % der Theorie. Der Stoff siedet bei 78℃ (15 Torr).
  Anm. 1: Das Succinimid wird wieder zur Darstellung von N-Bromsuccinimid verwendet.
