• Beschreibung

  Das 1-Propanal bildet eine eine farblose, leichtbewegliche, sehr flüchtige Flüssigkeit mit erstickendem Geruch. Die Substanz wird in der chemischen Technik für eine Vielzahl von Synthesen verwendet.

• Synthese

  In einem 1000-ml-Dreihals-Rundkolben werden 125 ml 1-Propanol (n-Propanol) vorgelegt. Der Kolben wird mit Tropftrichter, Thermometer 0 bis 100℃, Destilierbrücke und Vorlage versehen. In den Tropftrichter füllt man eine Lösung von 82 g Kaliumdichromat in 60 ml konz. Schwefelsäure und 350 ml Wasser. Diese chromsaure Oxidationslösung wird nun schnell in das 1-Propanol gegeben, das kurz zuvor in einem Wasserbad auf 80℃ erhitzt wurde. Der größtenteils sofort überdestillierende Aldehyd wird zur Reinigung unter Normaldruck fraktioniert. Die zwischen 47 und 50℃ überdestillierende Fraktion besteht aus reinem 1-Propanal und hat einen Brechungsindex von 1,362.

• LECKAGE

  Zündquellen entfernen. Ausgelaufene Flüssigkeit möglichst in abdichtbaren Behältern sammeln. Reste mit Sand oder inertem Absorptionsmittel aufnehmen und an einen sicheren Ort bringen. NICHT in die Kanalisation spülen. Persönliche Schutzausrüstung: Atemschutzfilter für organische Gase und Dämpfe.

• Gefahren für Mensch und Umwelt

  Leichtentzündlich. Die Dämpfe sind viel schwerer als Luft und bilden mit Luft explosive Gemische. Propionaldehyd löst eine Reihe von Kunststoffen. Die Einwirkung von starken Säuren und Laugen kann zu heftigen Reaktionen, die von Oxidationsmitteln zu stürmischer Selbstentzündung führen. Wärme und UV-Strahlung bewirken, besonders bei Gegenwart von Iod, Schwefelwasserstoff, Alkalien oder Säuren den Zerfall in Kohlenmonoxid und Ethan. In fein verteilter Form, wie auf Textilien oder Aufsaugmittel, kann an Luft Selbstentzündung eintreten.
  Reizt die Augen, Atmungsorgane und die Haut. Inhalation kann infolge Lähmung, Entzündung und Ödem von Kehlkopf und Bronchien zum Tode führen. Nach Kontakt können folgende Symptome auftreten: Hitzegefühl, Husten, Atemnot, Kehlkopfentzündung, Kurzatmigkeit, Kopfschmerzen, Übelkeit und Erbrechen.

  Dicht verschlossen aufbewahren, Im Abzug arbeiten.
  Neopren-Schutzhandschuhe nur als kurzzeitiger Spritzschutz.

  Mit flüssigkeitsbindendem Material aufnehmen und in verschlossener Flasche der Entsorgung zuführen. Nachreinigen. Dämpfe nicht einatmen. Kleine Spritzer verdampfen lassen.

  Kleine Mengen: Propionaldehyd wird mit konz. Natriumhydrogensulfitlösung in das Bisulfitaddukt überführt. Je nach Begleitstoffen mit den halogenhaltigen oder halogenfreien Lösungsmitteln entsorgen.
  Größere Mengen: Als Sondermüll entsorgen.

  Propionaldehyde is a volatile liquid substance which consists of one carbonyl group and its characteristic functional group. The main functional group is an aldehyde which classifies propionaldehyde in the carbonyls. The main trunk of this substance is a short aliphatic chain. The carbonyl group determines, to a large extent, its chemical properties and most importantly its nucleophilic property. Propionaldehyde is readily oxidized if in contact to oxygen and should therefore be stored under inert gases.

  Propionaldehyde has a characteristic sharp and pungent odor similar to acetaldehyde.It undergoes reactions typical for the low molecular weight aldehydes, which, because of the terminal carbonyl group, are very reactive.   Propionaldehyde is used in the productionof propionic acid, propionic anhydride, andmany other compounds. It is formed in theoxidative deterioration of corn products, suchas corn chips. It occurs in automobile exhaustgases.

  Propionaldehyde is produced by the oxo reaction of ethylene with carbon monoxide and hydrogen. n-Propyl alcohol is produced by hydrogenation of propionaldehyde, and propionic acid is made by oxidation of propionaldehyde.
  n-Propyl alcohol is used as solvent in printing inks and as an intermediate in the preparation of agricultural chemicals. Propionic acid is used as a grain preservative as, for example, in preventing spoilage of wet corn used as animal feed. The use of propionic acid as a grain preservative is an alterna tive to drying by heating, which consumes fuel, and is considered mostly when fuel is expensive.

Subcutaneous administration in ratsexhibited the symptoms of general anestheticeffect, convulsion, and seizure. Inhalationtoxicity was determined to be low. A concentrationof 8000 ppm (19,000 mg/m³) inair was lethal to rats.

  In a mutagenic test in V79 cells, Eder et al. observed that propionaldehyde is not mutagenic at 1 mM, but is toxic at 2mM. Similar to acrolein, Eder et al. suggested that the mutagenicity of this compound is mediated by its bifunctionality, whereas its cytotoxicity is mediated by the aldehyde function.
