NPSR1 (neuropeptide S receptor 1) gene encodes a protein th at serves as a receptor for neuropeptide S and this complex in involved in the regulation of pain transmission. It is expressed in areas mediating anxiety and stress responses and also in areas related to descending control system of pain. It plays a role in inflammation, anxiety and nociception. Polymorphism in this gene is associated with asthma and inflammatory bowel disease, panic disorders, and rheumatoid arthritis.
