General Description
White liquid with a strong skunk-like odor.
Reactivity Profile
ISOPROPYL MERCAPTAN(75-33-2) is incompatible with acids, diazo and azo compounds, halocarbons, isocyanates, aldehydes, alkali metals, nitrides, hydrides, and other strong reducing agents. Reactions with these materials generate heat and in many cases hydrogen gas. May liberate hydrogen sulfide when mixed with an acid.
Air & Water Reactions
Highly flammable. Soluble in water.
Hazard
Highly flammable, dangerous fire hazard.
Health Hazard
Inhalation causes loss of sense of smell, muscular weakness, convulsions, respiratory paralysis. Ingestion causes nausea and vomiting. Contact with eyes or skin causes irritation.
Chemical Properties
liquid with an exceedingly unpleasant smell
Occurrence
2-Propanethiol is a volatile sulfur compound that is reported to occur in irradiated beef.
Definition
ChEBI: An alkanethiol that is propane substituted by a sulfanyl group at position 2.
Preparation
2-Propanethiol is synthesised by the reaction of sodium hydrosulfide and brominated isopropane.
