(-)-Ascofuranone is an antibiotic with antitumor activity. It suppresses PMA-mediated matrix metalloproteinase-9 gene activation through the Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK- and Ap1-dependent mechanisms. (-)-Ascofuranone was effective in the treatment against Trypanosoma brucei brucei infection in mice.

It is a dihydroxybenzaldehyde, a member of monochlorobenzenes, an olefinic compound, a member of resorcinols, a meroterpenoid, a sesquiterpenoid and a tetrahydrofuranone. It is a conjugate acid of an ascofuranone(1-).

Moderately toxic byintraperitoneal route. Whenheated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Cl^-.
