General Description
A clear liquid with a repulsive odor. Boiling point 168.3°C. Insoluble in water and denser than water. Very toxic by ingestion, skin absorption, and by inhalation. Used as a chemical intermediate and in mosquito control.
Reactivity Profile

Air & Water Reactions
Flammable. Oxidizes upon exposure to air, especially when dissolved in alcoholic ammonia, to form diphenyl disulfide, C6H5SSC6H5 [Merck 11th ed. 1989]. Is supplied under an atmosphere of nitrogen. Insoluble in water.

Potential Exposure
Phenyl mercaptan is used as a chemical intermediate in pesticide manufacture; as a mosquito larvicide. It is used in solvent formulations for the removal of polysulfide sealants.
Fire Hazard
When heated to decomposition or on contact with acids, PHENYL MERCAPTAN emits toxic fumes of sulfur oxides. May be ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Container may explode in heat of fire. Vapor explosion and poison hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Unstable, oxidizes in air. Avoid contact with acids.
First aid
If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove any contact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least 30 minutes, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. If available, flush eyes with large amounts of 0.5% silver nitrate, followed immediately by very large amounts of water. Continue water for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts the skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediately with soap and water. Speed in removing material from skin is of extreme importance. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR if heart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medical facility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and induce vomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit. Medical observation is recommended for 2448 hours after breathing overexposure, as pulmonary edema may be delayed. As first aid for pneumonitis or pulmonary edema, a doctor or authorized paramedic may consider administering a drug or other inhalation therapy.
