Application

p-Toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate is an organic-soluble acid catalyst in organic synthesis. The catalyst has been incorporated in the esterification of carboxylic acids or transesterification of esters. The compound has been used as a reducing agent for the reductive amination of ketones and aldehydes. In the presence of p-Toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate novel deazaflavin-cholestane hybrid compounds have been synthesized in a condensation reaction. 2-Phenylethyl alpha-glucoside has also been synthesized in the presence of p-Toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate. p-Toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate is an intermediate in organic syntheses.

p-Toluenesulfonic acid Monohydrate is comparable in strength to mineral acids such as Sulphuric acid, but is suitable for organic reactions where an inorganic, mineral acid could cause charring, oxidation, or an unwanted chemical reaction. It is further used for acid-catalyst reaction such as esterification, condensation, acetylation and alkylation.
