Application of tridecanoic acid in analytical method

Dec 5,2019

Description

Tridecylic acid, or tridecanoic acid, is a 13-carbon saturated fatty acid with the chemical formula CH=COOH. Tridecanoic acid has been used as an internal standard for the lipid analysis of total intramuscular fat from broilers and fatty acid analysis in chinook salmon roe lipids. It has also been used as a reference standard in gas chromatography for quantifying fatty acids in meat samples [1].

Application

As early as in 1977, J. R. Caperos and J. G. Fernandez developed a gas chromatography method for simultaneous determination of hippuric and o-, m-, and p-methylhippuric acids (metabolites of toluene and xylene) in urine. The analytical procedure is based on the extraction of the aromatic metabolites with ethyl acetate containing the internal standard (IS) and on a methylation with 3-methyl-l-p-tolyltriazene. With this method, which does not require much time and handling, the different acids can be satisfactorily determined with high sensitivity and specificity. A statistical study shows a good reproducibility for the determination of hippuric and o-, m-, and p-methylhippuric acids. The coefficient of variation for 10 determinations in all cases was less than 5% [2]. The internal standard was used in the method is tridecanoic acid.

A. Gonzaâ Lez Casado and coworkers developed a simple method for determination of fatty acids (C8±C22) in wastewater, extracted with dichloromethane. The extraction time was drastically reduced using ultrasound and fatty acids were esterified using BF3 methanolic solution followed by an 11 min run using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with selected ion monitoring (GC/MS-SIM). A clean-up is not necessary using SIM Mode. Tridecanoic acid was used as a surrogate internal standard in the method, and detection limits go from 0.008 to 0.016 mg/L, and the applicable concentration range was 0.010 to 10 mg/L. The method was validated by using the standard addition methodology and it was applied satisfactorily to wastewater from Granada (Spain) [3].
