Usage
Used as a thermal spray material for protecting the underlying metal surface, and as an additive to corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant materials. It is used in coatings of bearings, seals, orifices, and valve seals, and as a fine-crystal phase in other sintered carbides.

First Aid Measures

Ingestion
Seek medical treatment.
Inhalation
Supply fresh air. If required, provide artificial respiration. Keep patient warm. Seek immediate medical advice.
Skin
Immediately wash with water and soap and rinse thoroughly. Seek immediate medical advice.
Eyes
Rinse opened eye for several minutes under running water. Then consult a doctor.

Handling and Storage

Storage
Store under dry inert gas. Protect from humidity and water. Keep container tightly sealed. Store in cool, dry conditions in well sealed containers.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Personal Protection
Protective work clothing. Chemical protective gloves. Safety glasses or goggles.
Exposure Effects
Causes irritation of eyes, skin and mucous membranes. Chromium powder, chromium (II) and chromium (III) compounds may cause nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, skin and eye irritation and pneumoconiosis. Although less likely than Cr(VI) compounds, the NTP considers all chromium to be potentially carcinogenic.
Exposure limit(s)
NIOSH PEL: 0.5 mg/m3 (as Cr)

Fire Fighting Measures

Fire Fighting
Extinguish with CO2, sand, extinguishing powder. Do not use water. Wear self-contained respirator. Wear fully protective impervious suit.
Fire Potential
Contact with water releases flammable gases.

Accidental Release Measures

Small spills/leaks
Ensure adequate ventilation. Keep away from ignition sources.

Stability and Reactivity

Incompatibilities
Acids, bases, water/moisture.
Stability
Decomposition will not occur if used and stored according to specifications.
Decomposition
Toxic metal oxide fumes, methane.
Combustion Products
Toxic metal oxide fumes.
