First Aid Measures

Ingestion
Do NOT induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.
Inhalation
Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. Get medical aid if cough or other symptoms appear.
Skin
Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Eyes
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.

Handling and Storage

Storage
Do not store near combustible materials. Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Keep away from flammable liquids.
Handling
Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Empty containers retain product residue, (liquid and/or vapor), and can be dangerous. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Keep away from clothing and other combustible materials. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose empty containers to heat, sparks or open flames.

May cause respiratory tract irritation. May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, convulsions, tachycardia, dyspnea, and death.

Causes skin irritation.

Causes eye irritation.
Ingestion
Ingestion of large amounts may cause gastrointestinal irritation. May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, convulsions, and death. Methemoglobinemia is characterized by dizziness, drowsiness, headache, breath shortness, cyanosis with bluish skin, rapid heart rate and chocolate-brown colored blood.
Hazards
May explode from heat or contamination. May react explosively with hydrocarbons (fuels). May ignite combustibles.

Personal Protection
Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to minimize contact with skin.

Exposure Effects
Throbbing headache is common. Seizures have been reported following severe intoxication. Behavioral deficits were observed in the adult offspring of rats who received sodium nitrite prenatally.

Fire Fighting Measures

Fire Fighting
Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Oxidizer. Greatly increases the burning rate of combustible materials. To extinguish fire, use water, dry chemical, chemical foam, or alcohol-resistant foam.
Fire Potential
Moderate fire hazard, by spontaneous chemical reaction; practically all nitrates are powerful oxidizing agents.

Accidental Release Measures

Small spills/leaks
Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Avoid generating dusty conditions.

Stability and Reactivity

Incompatibilities
Can react dangerously with aluminum, boron phosphide, cyanides, esters, phospham, phosphorus, sodium cyanide, sodium hypophosphite, stannous chloride, and thiocyanates.
Stability
Stable under normal temperatures and pressures.
Decomposition
Nitrogen oxides, aluminum oxide, aluminum fumes.
Combustion Products
Toxic oxides of nitrogen may form in fire.
